Birgit Nilsson Prize awarded to Plácido Domingo - An event in remembrance of a great singer

Plácido Domingo has been named the first recipient of the Birgit Nilsson Prize. He
was awarded the Prize by H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf at a festive ceremony held at
the Royal Swedish Opera. The audience, many well-known, witnessed a grand
evening of celebration – and a very emotional Prize winner.

Ticket sales for award ceremony of The Birgit Nilsson Prize to open
(Stockholm, 3 August 2009)
On 4 August 2009, ticket sales for the first award ceremony of the Birgit Nilsson Prize will start on www.birgitnilssonprize.org. The festive ceremony will take place at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm on 13 October 2009 in the presence of the Royal Family and the designated winner Plácido Domingo. The musical programme stars soprano Nina Stemme and the conductor Gregor Bühl.

On 13 October 2009, H.M. King Carl Gustaf will personally hand over the Birgit
Nilsson Prize, worth one million dollars, to the winner Plácido Domingo. Apart from
the Royal Family, well-known figures from the fields of opera, culture and politics
are expected to attend the first-ever award ceremony of the biggest prize in
classical music history.

Plácido Domingo to be Awarded One Million Dollar Birgit Nilsson Prize

The Birgit Nilsson Foundation announces today
that Plácido Domingo is the first winner of the One Million Dollar Birgit Nilsson
Prize, the biggest prize in classical music history. It was the wish of the legendary
Swedish dramatic soprano Birgit Nilsson (1918 - 2005) to award outstanding
achievements in the international field of opera and concert with a prize in the
amount of one million dollars. The name of the first prize winner, chosen by Birgit
Nilsson herself, was kept secret until this official announcement. Plácido Domingo
will receive the Birgit Nilsson Prize in a formal award ceremony in late 2009.
